Sydney Modern Project

Role: Public Art Curatorial Advisor
Development: Sydney Modern Project, The Domain Sydney by SANAA and Architectus
Client: Art Gallery of NSW

The Sydney Modern Public Art Strategy was provided to the Art Gallery of NSW for the Sydney Modern Project. The consultancy involved providing advise around the vision, objectives, context, opportunity sites, and commissioning process in collaboration with AGNSW curators and key staff along with global leading Japanese architecture firm SANAA and Architectus. SANAA's architectural design for the Sydney Modern Project is a series of interconnected pavilions cascading down the site and reflecting its natural topography. In an effort to invigorate the viewing experience visitors will be encouraged to navigate the intentionally hierarchically free gallery spaces in their own personalised way.

The vision for public art at Sydney Modern is for artworks that are distinctive, memorable and exceptional that announce Sydney Modern as a significant global and civic space. Implementing the strategy, public artworks commissioned for Sydney Modern and curated by the AGNSW include large scale artworks by international artists Francis Upritchard, Yayoi Kusama and an artwork integrated into the landscape design by First Nations artist Jonathan Jones.
