Sam Songailo, Pink and Blue Oasis, Sydney

As part of the Sydney Metro Northwest Places public art program, the curator proposed and collaboratively shortlisted six artists commissioned to create large scale artworks surrounding Northwest stations in celebration of the Day One launch of Sydney Metro.

Sam Songailo was one of the artists selected from a list of international and Australian artists put forward by the curator, to create two memorable, distinct, powerful, contemporary and bold artworks. Pink and Blue Oasis is a hand painted ground and wall mural creating a truly immersive experience for the viewer that spans an area of four hundred and eighty squared meters. The mezmerising artwork unifies the space of a park alongside Bella Vista Sydney Metro station through colour and pattern.

Sam Songailo is a Melbourne based artist who's practice takes many forms incorporating installation, painting, video, sound and sculpture. Deeply influenced by digital technology and electronic music, he adopts algorithms and concepts from these disciplines that shape his approach to both physical and pictorial space. The results are highly immersive monumental artworks that require the viewer to enter into their space. Accentuating the compositional elements of line and space in a form, his art recalls both the modernist grid and digital networks.

Other artists in the program included David Booth “Ghostpatrol”, Jan van der Ploeg, Jason Wing, Georgia Hill and Timothy Harland in this first iteration, followed by a second iteration in 2021 by Maddison Gibbs, Bradley ‘Beastman’ Eastman, Nadia Hernandez, Leanne Watson with Tina Barahanos and Alexandra Byrne and Ian Mutch.
