Green Square Public Art Program & Strategy
Role: Public Art Curator
Development: Green Square Town Centre, Sydney
Program / Client: Green Square Public Art as part of City Art for the City of Sydney
The Green Square Public Art Strategy was first authored by Amanda Sharrad in 2007 and updated in 2013. It is a masterplanning strategy for guiding the planning and development of public art throughout one of the City of Sydney’s newest areas, the Green Square Town Centre.
The development of an urban renewal project the scale of Green Square for the City of Sydney was unprecedented. It includes residential and work places, new library, parks, aquatic centre and creative hub. Architectural jewels include the award winning Green Square Library and Plaza by Stewart Hollenstein, the Drying Green park by Macgregor + Coxall Landscape Architects, Peter Stutchbury’s Creative Centre and Andrew Burges Gunyama Park Acquatic Centre, as well as private surrounding developments by esteemed architects such as Arc by Koichi Takada and Ovo by FJMT.
So far the Green Square Public Art Program has included significant public artworks curated directly by Amanda such as the international artist Tobias Rehberger’s We Are Here and Everywhere along the length of Zetland Avenue, Kerrie Poliness’ Stream for the Drying Green Park and Maria Fernanda Cardoso’s While I Live I Will Grow for the Joynton Avenue Creative Centre. The Green Square Public Art Strategy has also guided public art commissions managed by the architectural teams that Amanda has advised on in her role, such as the Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro’s Cloud Nation and Lightwell’s High Water for the Green Square Library by Stewart Hollestein with Jess Scully as the design team’s curatorial advisor. Other art commissions guided by the Strategy include Jonathan Jones and Auntie Julie Freeman’s Bangala for Gunyama Park Aquatic Centre.
