Bronwyn Oliver, Magnolia and Palm

Role: Public Art Assistant Curator
Development: Sydney Sculpture Walk, Sydney CBD, Royal Botanic Gardens and The Domain
Program / Client: City Art for the City of Sydney

Amanda was the City of Sydney Assistant Curator of Public Art for the Sydney Sculpture Walk program and other new artworks being commissioned as major City of Sydney initiatives in the lead up to the 2000 Olympic Games and 2001 Centenary of Federation.

Bronwyn Oliver's Magnolia and Palm are two finely executed copper filigree sculptures nestled amongst the foliage of Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Enlarged versions of seed pods from the magnolia and palm tree under which they sit, the artworks were designed to form a beautiful patina with time in order to reflect upon the natural surroundings. The intent of the artist was that the forms appear like flotsam and jetsam “washed up by the tide, blown by the wind, eroded by water and laden with the potential for vigour and transformation”.

The Sculpture Walk consists of ten public artworks by international and Australian artists throughout Sydney's CBD, East Circular Quay, the Royal Botanic Gardens and The Domain. As Assistant Curator Amanda worked closely with esteemed Curator of the Sydney Sculpture Walk, Sally Couacaud, and each of the artists to develop, project manage and realise the public art program that address historical and cultural aspects of the many high profile and beautiful sites throughout the CBD in which they are housed.
